About

HEBLU is an independent lighting design consultancy established in Bucharest in 2019. Its aim is to provide quality lighting design as an integral element of architecture by focusing on how spaces and materials are experienced through light and by pushing beyond the limits of just complying with codes and regulations.

The company provides impartial advice and has no affiliations with manufacturers, distributors, or installers of lighting equipment. Luminaire selection is based solely on performance, aesthetic and built quality criteria.

Each project is treated as unique and services are personalized to the specific needs of the client. Our purpose is to aid the design team throughout the development of a project, from initial concept to its execution. We provide consultancy for both interior and exterior spaces for project sectors such as: workplace, mixed-use, cultural, historic, hospitality, retail, residential, landscape and public spaces.

As a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers, HEBLU abides to the IALD Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.

For electricians, heblu is the Romanian word used for a main general switch. Due to the effect it causes, in theatre lighting, heblu designates the moment when all the lights are turned off and everything has faded-to-black. The meaning of the word shifted to describe a short moment of darkness that marks a transition from one scene to another. In a movie, heblu is the split-second black screen used to signify to the unconscious the end and/or beginning of a storyline or scene.

Why hire a lighting designer?

Cost

A lighting designer can help establish the lighting budget early on, during the initial stages of a project, or can provide a lighting solution within a given budget.

By negotiating directly with multiple manufacturers/distributors, a lighting designer can get the best value without compromising the quality of the design. This encourages competition and lowers the price of purchase for the lighting equipment.

By optimizing light levels, technical parameters, luminaire positions and quantities, over-lighting can be avoided, reducing the cost of the equipment.

A lighting designer can also recommend methods to reduce installation and long-term operation/maintenance costs.

Quality

The client receives an independent value-adding consultancy based on knowledge and experience, free from conflicts of interest.

Each project is tailored with a unique solution. Good lighting design is not standard. It requires attention to details and an experienced eye.

A wide range of qualitative parameters are taken into account to develop the design: the quality of light and its changing conditions in time, atmosphere, visual comfort, task performance, health, safety and well-being.

Luminaire selection is not limited to any specific supplier. This offers the freedom for an unconstrained pursuit of creative and innovative solutions.

Architecture

A lighting designer will focus on creating a solution that: integrates unobtrusively with the architecture, respects the core principles of the design, enhances the atmosphere of each space.

By developing daylight studies, a lighting designer can advise on the integration between natural and artificial light.

A lighting designer can give advice on how material finishes influence the lighting of a space.

Light and shadow can become predictable and controlled. Any unforeseen outcomes or bad lighting can be avoided.
